Internet TV viewers, I need your help:
Last Fall I fell head-over-heels for Modern Family. I tried to fight it, I really did. I wasn’t interested in another middle-class family show involving clueless parents with ironically detached kids.
I didn’t want to fall prey to producers who were trying to “speak” to me or convince me that they knew how hilariously ridiculous my family is and are therefore capable of emulating it for my viewing pleasure. Then I watched it. I was immediately smitten. It’s not trying to be my family, it’s just a family. The kids are kids and the parents do their best, but they’re really just adults trying to behave like grown-ups amidst their own immaturity and what’s not to love about that?
I haven’t seen a show exploit familial quirks this well since Malcolm In The Middle, and that’s saying a lot. It might be saying too much, actually, but I’m sticking to it. That’s why this All Things Digital article implying that the show creator, Steve Levitan, wants his show to stay offline has me spinning in circles. Double rainbow, WHAT COULD THIS MEAN?! The show already stands out from its ABC compatriots: Modern Family only has just one episode available on ABC.com and Hulu, whereas the rest of ABC’s lineup are offering five.
If you were planning on catching the Modern Family premiere online tomorrow, you might want to play the safe card and watch it on TV tonight.
Although the show will air as usual on Television sets, will my computer have a gaping hole where love and laughter once lived? The article eludes to this being a temporary deal, but it’s unclear whether or not that means season one was temporarily off the Web or if the entire future of the show will be offline, or only accessible through various for-pay-only services.
Will tonight’s premiere be posted online tomorrow morning? I’m just not sure.
Here’s the thing; I don’t own a TV. (I know, hardcore, right?) But really, unless I shell out the cash to pay for the season after it airs, my favorite TV family is going to move on without me. It’ll be just like Home Alone, only they won’t ever know I’m gone and I don’t have a nice enough house to rob.
So what do you, the Internet TV audience, make of all this? Do you believe Modern Family will be for pay from here on out? Or do you think Steve Levitan is crying wolf? Make yourself heard in our comment section below!
