My Damn Channel has just announced a slew of new and returning shows in a
press release posted earlier this morning, including the return of Don Was, the Dr. Owen Maestro companion series to Childrens’ Hospital, RAMP, and The Room. Amidst the plethora of new original content, three caught my eye:
Spook House Dave: Did somebody say puppets? This show is flat out adorable; a major throw-back to a time when puppetry reigned as a family favorite. Spook House Dave, a show about a kid named Dave who lives in a house with a whole bunch of friendly monsters, doesn’t take the modern approach to kids programming, wherein each episode has a massive lesson or moral – and this is probably why I love it so much. Yes, life lessons are important, but so is having fun. Spook House Dave knows how to play, and for that reason I think it’s got a shot at attracting a pretty expansive audience.
SUPEREGO: Wow, if only I had studied to become a therapist. People let you do anything! This show packs a really funny punch and the acting is spot-on, but it also plays with a pretty cryptic message; that putting complete faith into your doctor isn’t always the best idea, particularly when it involves your sanity. Backed by FOX Television Studios, this new series offers a glance into the mental health industry that few other therapy-driven Web Series have come up with, and that makes it far more appealing than most thus far. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this one goes; it’s off to a really engaging start.
Go Sukashi!: This is like a parody of Power Rangers, Japanese manga, and Don Quixote all at once. I didn’t really know what to make of this show at first, but if you stick with it and watch the first episode the whole way through, I think you’ll come to agree that it’s freakishly endearing. The 36-second mark was the game changer for me; I was completely caught off guard by my own laughter in response to our superhero’s ridiculously exaggerated fighting moves. The Don Quixote element is key, as the juxtaposition between Sukashi’s imagination (his highly entertaining combat style) and real life (his seriously atrocious attempts at movement) is a really creative way to poke fun at whatever genre of action-adventure these guys are poking fun at. This series is silly but it has fun with itself, and for that, I can really get behind it.
Keep in mind that these are a mere three out of the ten new shows and seasons that My Damn Channel debuted this week, so you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take the time pick up the rest of what these guys laid down this morning. Make sure to check it all out and let us know what you think about what you watch!
