For those of us who miss Harriet The Spy, The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, and all those other great ‘90s Nickelodeon productions, Web network Koldcast has us covered with the funny and kid-friendly Web series, Ruby Skye P.I.
From the peppy background music to the main character’s Clarissa Explains It All-esque camera monologues, you’ll finish an episode of this delightful Web series and swear you used to watch it on SNICK.
The series centers on Ruby, played by Madison Cheeatow, a pint-sized P.I. who solves mysteries with a pluck Encyclopedia Brown University would envy. There are not enough good things I can say about Cheeatow or her two incredibly talented cohorts: younger sis Haley, played by Marlee Maslove, and long-suffering pal Griffen, played by Kevin Gutierrez. The kids are fresh and funny in a way that comes off as 100% authentic, and unlike many kid-centric shows (both on the Web and TV) “Ruby” showcases child actors utilizing their strong intellectual capabilities.
The mysteries may be silly—ranging from a Nigerian money scam to a sham wedding—but you feel it every time Ruby makes a mistake, or when her friends turn on her a la “Harriet.” And true to those wonderful ‘90s shows, the adults are hilariously bumbling and over the top, from villains to supporting characters.
Overall, Ruby Skye P.I. is a treat for both the youngest and oldest Internet surfers, proving that the best shows are not always on TV.
