In honor of JerrySeinfeld.com
launching today (and not being particularly good) I took it upon myself to finally write that Seinfeld SPEC I’ve been talking about.
So here it is. An excerpt from, “The Website: What’s the DEAL with No Direct Links?,” my Seinfeld Fan-Fiction Spec Screenplay:
INT. JERRY’S LIVING ROOM – DAY
JERRY stands in his kitchen, sipping at a cup of coffee when KRAMER
barges in with his signature “Kramer” style.
KRAMER
Jerry, your new website is up and it’s TERRIBLE!
JERRY
What? Why?
George stands up from the couch.
GEORGE
Cause of no direct links, Jerry!
JERRY
No direct links? Why would I want direct links?
GEORGE
(yelling/indignant)
Because the people like direct links, Jerry!
KRAMER
They like sending links to their friends, Jerry.
(Kramer squeal)
I wanted to send your Airline Food bit to Newman.
JERRY
Newman… Well now I’m definitely not doing direct links. If Newman
wants direct links, I’m NOT doing direct links.
George throws his arms into the sky.
GEORGE
Direct links!
The intercom buzzes. Jerry goes to it, and hits the button.
ELAINE (O.S.)
Elaine.
JERRY
Come on up.
Jerry buzzes her up.
KRAMER
You’re using javascript to load the html5 videos, which is the opposite
of the point of the html5.
JERRY
What? Where did you learn that? Did you just make that up?
KRAMER
I know things, Jerry. I KNOW THINGS!
Elaine enters.
ELAINE
Downloadable links but no direct links?
JERRY
Yeah? So?
ELAINE
If you make them downloadable, why don’t you just make them direct links.
JERRY
I don’t know! I’m bad at the Internet!
GEORGE
You can say that again!
They all start making out. (Hey -I did say this was fan-fiction!)
In all seriousness, we love the idea of the new JerrySeinfeld.com. Every Seinfeld stand-up clip ever being available online? It just doesn’t get any better. But when the site launched today, we were really disappointed:
- You can’t share individual links with friends. The new site misses out on the opportunity to share individual videos via Twitter, Facebook and all other exciting forms of social media. Instead, you can only share links that lead to the homepage, eliminating the great potential for discussion around Seinfeld’s best acts.
- And perhaps the bigger mistake – open a video, right click and save. That’s right! You can download every available Seinfeld clip. This certainly couldn’t have been on purpose. Not at a time when piracy is the biggest concern of most content creators. Anyone could just download these videos and make their own Seinfeld site (with direct links!).
We applaud the effort, but frankly, the execution was flawed. Better luck next time?
