Got An iPad? You’ll Be Needing This.

After a weekend visiting friends in Portland, my iPad was waiting for me when I got home late Sunday afternoon.  I tried to chillax and not to get my hopes up too much after all the blog and critical love it received (that’s what happened with Up In The Air and it was one of the most clichéd movies of the year – give me a break he would never be that excited to stay at a Hilton), but after playing with the iPad all night, it was hard to avoid the feeling that I was “early adopting” the future of media consumption.

Watching things on the iPad is a complete joy, from ABC’s excellent app, to Netflix instant streaming, to TedTalks. The problem, at least at the get-go, is that by excluding Flash support, Apple forced content owners to make a mad dash to “iPad compatibility.” Not everyone made it.  In fact, it’s really confusing to figure out what videos are viewable on the iPad and which aren’t, who requires an app vs. letting you stream from their site, etc.

That’s why, starting today, users who visit Clicker.com via their iPad will automatically be redirected to an “iPad Edition” of our service that provides a one-stop programming guide for the television, movies, Web originals and music videos that are watchable on the iPad.

Since we’re on Day 3 of the iPad’s general availability, a few things to note about the iPad Edition of Clicker:

– Defining the content that’s available on the iPad is a moving target this early in its existence.  We’re doing the legwork of identifying what services are working and which aren’t, but we won’t be 100% accurate as those services make adjustments on their end. Stay with us as we ride the bull!

– Handoffs between services are not consistently working yet across the iPad.  For example, while YouTube works on the iPad via its own, dedicated service, it is not always working when accessed via one of their partner sites.

– Programs available for download via the iTunes store aren’t in the Clicker catalog just yet. We are at the tail end of adding iTunes to all of Clicker, not just the iPad Edition, so we will launch this all at once. Expect iTunes coverage within two weeks.

– Soon you’ll have the ability to filter your Clicker Playlist so you can see content that is only available to watch on your iPad.

– A Clicker iPad App. For starters, our iPad product will be a Clicker.com Web based experience only. A full-fledged app is coming soon.

In terms of content, the immediate popularity of the iPad means the list of compatible video sites will grow quickly. We will be adding their content as it happens, so keep checking back.

Be sure to send us any and all feedback on both the iPad version of Clicker and any programs we are missing to: ipad@clicker.com. You can also ping us on Twitter (@clicker) or Facebook.

Man we are all such geeks, aren’t we?
