Breaking Down This Season’s Finales: How Final Did They Feel?

It’s season finale time for a number of series. Here’s a look at how several of last week’s finales that bid farewell to fans for the summer, all of which you can currently watch online, free of charge (warning: spoiler alerts below):

Brothers & Sisters (ABC)
Well, the red herring for Robert’s (Rob Lowe) exit from the show was his low resting heart-rate, leading some to believe it’d be death by heart failure. Instead, it was a car crash with Kitty nearby—and though Lowe’s exit was expected, the scene was still intense.

Amazing Race (CBS)
From Switzerland to Florida (via Rio,) Kisha and Jen Hoffman finished in first. Ending the race with a bicycle ride across Florida’s Seven-Mile Bridge was perfectly dramatic. The sisters edged out the Harlem Globetrotter’s duo, which, of course, worsened the iconic basketball team’s record to 84,905-1.

Undercover Boss (CBS)
The season finale followed the chancellor of UC-Riverside as he tried a number of university jobs.  We learned that he couldn’t walk backwards and that, just like in the 1920s, a mustache and earring effectively hide your identity. The beauty of this show is in the change that is effected at the end of the episode—here, major funds were allocated to the track team and a student.

CSI: Miami (CBS)
Plane crash. Manhunt. CSI has done this before. The cliffhanger leaves us wondering what will happen to Horatio and Natalia (I wouldn’t lose sleep).  Plus, the previous week’s episode was pre-empted by Obama, so there wasn’t much momentum leading up to the finale. In the same breath, these types of shows can be cookie-cutter at times, so if you’re in it for the adrenaline rush then maybe you got it, maybe not.

30 Rock (NBC)
Though the series’ 100th episode two weeks ago felt a lot more like a finale, the actual finale was typically hilarious and clever. The final scene, though, does feature the main cast running into each other as Kenneth looks on in the distance, from a telescope, yelling, “Give me more time with them!” followed by a “To be continued…” This show’s been hitting its stride for a while now, and this season’s finale was no different.

Community (NBC)
It’s safe to say the second season finale of Community left its fans happy. And probably those who’ve just started to migrate down from The Office. The two-part finale featured a massive paintball fight that successfully and delightfully replicated a mish-mash of Western flicks and Star Wars.

Smallville (CW)
Among those who’ve followed the series over the past ten years, the general consensus is satisfaction. The two-hour series finale ties several loose ends: Clark’s relationship with Lois Lane, his mother, and Jor-El. It was brilliant to bring Lux Luthor back. And the final scene where Clark opens his shirt in the classical Superman manner was certainly the moment of culmination that fans craved.
