Do kids lack taste or do kids’ shows just lack imagination? What came first, the chicken or the egg? We got excited when we heard that Nickelodeon would be streaming live coverage online of the Orange Carpet at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards this Saturday. In celebration of the event, we decided to take a peek into who’s been nominated in past years and we were a bit shocked to find out that what’s popular for kids doesn’t really seem to change from year to year.
The same actors, shows, and even athletes have been up for the same Kids’ Choice Award multiple times in the past 5 years. iCarly has been nominated every year since 2008 (it won the past two years!). SpongeBob SquarePants took home the Blimp in 2007, 2009, and 2010 and it’s nominated again this year. Cole Sprouse has been nominated for Favorite TV Actor for 5 years running! And a whopping 55% of shows up for the Favorite Cartoon award since 2007 have been Nickelodeon shows (the Favorite TV Show noms clock in at a slightly less impressive 35%). Which brings me back to where I started: Do kids lack taste or do kids shows lack imagination? Let’s take a look at what’s up for the Blimp on Sunday and what’s been up in the past few years:

When I was a kid, I seem to remember some pretty quality programming. Clarissa Explains It All? The Adventures of Pete & Pete? The Animated X-Men series? Full House? I’m not trying to knock the Sprouse twins or iCarly, but is this really the only good programming for kids out there nowadays? I know kids like what they like, but will a little variety really hurt them? Decide for yourself: are these shows really the best of the best, or do we need to step up kids programming a notch in 2012?
Can’t wait for this year’s findings? Check out the Kids’ Choice Live Stream, starting at 7pm ET on Saturday, April 2nd. The stream will only last until the show begins at 8pm, but Train and Victoria Justice will be performing a live show on the Orange Carpet, so it will be worth your while. You can also check out clips and behind-the-scene videos at Nick.com.
