The Pillars of the Earth, an eight-hour miniseries that premieres on Starz tomorrow night, is based on 1989′s best-selling novel written by Ken Follet. It follows a character named Tom Builder, a stonemason who plays a crucial part in the movement toward Gothic Architecture in England during the civil war between Empress Maud and King Stephen.
It sounds a bit convoluted, yes, and I’m sure it is, but I’m also sure that the cast is fantastic, the production quality is stunning, and the plot is ripe with as much passion and greed as one could hope for from a 12th century period piece. How am I so sure? Because Starz has released the first two hour-long episodes online for free, and they are available right now, even before it airs on cable!
